Scientists now have proof that they can cure HIV. It was confirmed yesterday that they are now able to edit out HIV-1 DNA from the genome of the human immune cells, thereby preventing virus replication and reinfection of the wiped cells. In other words, they used 'gene therapy' to cure HIV in human cells.
Dr Kamel Khalili, director of the Comprehensive NeuroAids Center at Temple University, claims that they are set to put this new gene therapy into a new drug that will cure patients of the virus, even after they stop taking it.
Khalili in a press release said "the findings are important on multiple levels. They demonstrate the effectiveness of our gene editing system in eliminating HIV from the DNA of CD4 T-cells and by introducing mutations into the viral genome, permanently in activating it's replication. Further, they show that the system can protect cells from reinfection and that the technology is safe for the cells, with no toxic effects. "
