US and UK surveillance discovered where the kidnapped schoolgirls captured by Boko Haram in 2014 were kept.
The former British high commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Andrew Pocock disclosed that a couple of months after the girls were kidnapped, an American eye in the sky spotted a group of up to 80 girls in a particular area in the Sambisa forest, around a very large tree which is locally called the tree of life, along with evidence of vehicles moving and a large encampment.
According to Dr Pocock, the girls were there for at least four weeks but authorities were powerless to intervene, he added that the Nigeria government did not ask for help anyway.
He explained why they could not intervene saying, a land based attack would have been seen coming miles away and the girls would have been killed, an air based rescue would have required large numbers and that would have been a bigger risk to both the rescue team and to the girls as a few might have been rescued but many would have been killed.
He also noted that his personal fear was always about the girls who were not in that encampment - 80 were there, but 250 were taken, so the bulk were not there.
According to Dr Pacock, the information was passed to Nigerians but they never requested for assistance.
