A 42-year-old Chinese man spotted what seemed like a varicose vein on the side of his foot after returning from a holiday in Nigeria. He got the foot examined at the hospital and was told he has been carrying a worm around in his foot.
Medics at the Peking Union Medical College, Beijing who examined the foot, told him he had a cutaneous larva migran, a parasitic larvae, living in his foot.
This disease is common in tropical countries, but the parasite does not burrow deeper into the skin, it is visible just beneath the outer skin and it is normally seen on the feet, back, buttocks, thighs or abdomen.
